Photography for Small Businesses in London
A behind-the-scenes look at a half-day shoot with Headmasters Clapham South — headshots, group shots, and how great photography helps local businesses stand out.

A fantastic team that look after their clients really well
Recently I had the pleasure of working with a dynamic team and a great local business in Clapham, Headmasters Clapham South.
The brief was simple and clear and yet fun and powerful: to capture photographs of the staff and group shots that they could use on the website and social media.
From our initial conversation it became clear that they had been looking at my work for a while on social media (instagram) and they felt it was time to get some new images done for their businesses.
On the day we agreed for the photoshoot, I spent half a day on site at the salon capturing a variety of images that showcased the brand, people and professionalism of this amazing Headmasters salon.
The impressions shared after the photoshoot and seeing the images in their private gallery, show how much they enjoyed the experience and the resulting photographs:
“We loved it. The girls had a great time, all excited to get the pics back”.
In this blog post, I want to share how creative and professional photography can elevate a business image and the details that go into planning a successful photoshoot.
As a photographer working with businesses large and small, I’ve had the opportunity to work with many for headshots and portraits but also for corporate, office and working environment photography that make the brand look more professional and elevated. I love each interaction I have with what are amazing businesses in South West London and generally across London.

Photography for small businesses in London - the power of Headshots and Portraits
High-quality headshots are essential for businesses to present a polished and cohesive image across the website, social media and marketing materials. When potential clients see confident, professional images of team members, it fosters trust and credibility.
For this particular small business, the Headmasters Salon in Clapham South, the team were genuinely excited to collaborate and were prepared and ready for the day of my visit.
Their excitement and enthusiasm made the atmosphere during the shoot vibrant and engaging. I didn’t need to do a lot of talking and we went straight into the poses and styles to make the most of the time together.
Plus my experience in how to pose and encourage the more nervous members of the team, made it a little bit easier for everyone to feel at ease in front of the camera.
Photography for small businesses in London - Planning the Photoshoot
Great photography doesn’t just happen.
It takes careful planning and communication between the photographer and the client for all the elements to align so that the time we spend on the photoshoot can be maximised creating and trying different styles and poses.
Prior to the shoot for the Headmasters Salon photoshoot, we had many messages with the owner of the salon to discuss her vision, goals, and the specific types of images she wanted. This included:
- Identifying Key Shots: We outlined the essential shots, including individual headshots, environmental portraits, group photos and lifestyle shots of the team in their working environment. This ensured that we captured a comprehensive view of the business.
- Choosing Locations: We decided on various locations within their space that would best represent their brand. Natural and professional looking images were a priority, so we selected areas near the entrance for the group shot with plenty of natural light to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.
- Wardrobe Coordination: To maintain a professional look, we discussed wardrobe choices. The team opted for a cohesive colour palette that reflected their brand identity, ensuring that the images would have a unified aesthetic.

Environmental Portraits and Working Space
The first part of the photoshoot was taking individual portraits of the team against a dark grey background that I had brought on the day for the photoshoot.
In addition to those I suggested we capture environmental portraits of team members in their working space. From experience I know that these images are valued and show a dfferent aspect and perspective. For visitors to the website or on social media they give a different view and a glimpse into what the working environment looks like. They also showcase the culture of the business and the vibe and help potential clients envision themselves working with the business.
During the shoot, I captured team members in their natural work environment, showcasing what the salon and the details look like. These images not only highlight the professionalism of the team but also convey a sense of approachability and warmth, which is crucial for attracting new clients.

Group photos and team togetherness
Group photos are invaluable for businesses looking to showcase their team and foster a sense of unity. During the photography session with Headmasters Clapham South, we captured a variety of group shots, from formal team photos to more casual candid moments.
The excitement in the room was palpable as the team got together, sharing laughter and camaraderie.
These images can be used on the company’s website and social media channels to highlight the collaborative nature of the business and the strong relationships between team members.
Being found locally
A great benefits of professional photography for small businesses is the impact it can have on local SEO and visibility.
By incorporating relevant keywords such as local place names, “Clapham,” “Balham”, “Tooting” and “London” into their images and in particular on the alt text of images on the website, businesses can improve their search engine rankings and attract more local clients.
High-quality images also enhance user engagement. When visitors see professional photographs, they are more likely to stay on the site longer, reducing bounce rates and improving overall SEO performance.
