Photography for Barristers and Solicitors in London

What it is like to work with barristers and solicitors in London to create professional photography that is representative of their profession and personality.

Photography for barristers and solicitors in London to convey what matters, and connect with the audience.

This was the time I worked with Cornerstone Barrister for a press release for their planning team.

Addressing my own misconception

Working with barristers and solicitors is starkly different from what I first thought it would be. I succumbed to the prejudiced belief that barristers and solicitors are all, collectively cold, not relatable and not very friendly. But time and again I have been proven wrong, and I hold my hands up to that.

The barristers and solicitors I have worked with over the years have all been very friendly, warm, relatable and down to earth, all of the qualities I believed they wouldn’t be, because I believed what I saw in the media.

Thinking about it, the image I had in my mind was a construct and quite a stereotypical one at that…

Working with barristers and solicitors to create their photographs is a process that takes into account what is unique about them, not so different from how I photograph other corporate professionals.

Representation matters when it comes to the legal profession – the very essence of what they do and deliver, they represent people and their problems.

So, how they come across and are perceived, matters. It matters more than it may do for others, which means their photos and digital persona’s must be warm, welcoming and professional.

Barristers and legal professionals operate in environments where credibility, judgement, and trust are foundational. These qualities are first encountered not in person, but through professional profiles, chambers websites, directories, and media appearances.

Photography, in this context, is not a marketing exercise, it is an extension of professional representation.

Photography as a form of communication

For many legal professionals, photography feels secondary — something to arrange when required, rather than a strategic decision.

However, having a photo picked by google as a profile from LinkedIn or Facebook alongside your name is not ideal. Choosing the image that represents you is the best way to make sure reputation remains intact, as this will be the image associated with your name.

Images are often the first point of contact for clients and their representatives when people search for:

  • Instructing solicitors
  • Clients and institutions
  • Chambers, committees, and appointment panels

Before the expertise is read, the image sets a tone. It answers unspoken questions about authority, composure, and credibility.

The role of photography is not to impress, but to reassure.

Where professional photography is used

Photography supports far more than websites alone. It underpins:

  • Chambers and firm profiles
  • CVs and professional biographies
  • Media commentary and press coverage
  • Speaking engagements and appointments
  • Internal and external communications

When imagery is consistent and considered, it reinforces the message that you take both your work and your representation seriously.

Presence matters

Legal photography is about projecting personality but also presence, focussing on creating images that show:

  • Authority without severity
  • Approachability without informality
  • Confidence without performance

The most effective images allow the viewer to feel that you are capable, dependable, and measured.

This balance is subtle, and it matters.

Understanding the legal context

One of the most common frustrations legal professionals express about photography is misalignment, when photographs don’t truly represent who you are as a professional or as an individual.

Photography that feels stiff or outdated and can misrepresent a modern, thoughtful practice.

Working well within the legal profession requires an understanding of:

  • Professionalism and expertise
  • The importance of discretion
  • Comfort with scrutiny
  • The need for consistency across individuals and institutions

A considered photographic approach respects these realities rather than attempting to override them.

A calm, efficient process

Legal professionals are rightly, highly protective of their time.

Therefore, a professional photography process should be:

  • Structured and efficient
  • Low-friction and well prepared
  • Calm, respectful, and unobtrusive

The aim is not to pretend or overcompensate, but to reflect an accurate presence. When the process is handled properly, the experience feels straightforward, and, thus, the outcome is effective.

An investment in credibility

The strongest professional photography rarely draws attention to itself; it lets the subject do the talking and establish presence. It:

  • Is not merely promotional.
  • Does not date quickly.
  • Represents authority, confidence and makes the person relatable.

For barristers and legal professionals, being perceived as a rounded, trustworthy, warm and relatable professional is after all what makes the difference in the eyes of any potential connection or future client. Or, as was my case, as a photographer.

This is the standard of the work I aim to create with working with barristers and legal professionals.
